More information you can either use or ignore....lol I just called the North Bay Health Unit. Spoke to a person that answered phone and asked why Nordic Ski Club allowed to be open? She transferred me to COVID call line. That lady didn't have an answer - however - I spoke with her for quite some time. The bottom line is.....apparently they take ALL complaints and put them on a "spreadsheet" which is where my complaint apparently is going. This "spreadsheet" is reviewed on a regular basis. So....I asked how many complaints are on the "spreadsheet" related to the snowmobile trails? - which she would not disclose (my bet is not as many as there are complaining they aren't open.....but I digress), so....if enough people actually call in to complain that the Nordic Ski Club should be considered part of "Outdoor Recreation" and not allowed - then that complaint will be registered on the "spreadsheet"! I am thinking it highly coincidental that "allegedly" said Health Director is a member of the Nordic Ski Club...and that club is a Membership Club. I called the Nordic Ski Club again to confirm this. Apparently the club is open to the public...BUT....MEMBERS ONLY during the lockdown! Wow...must be nice to have only members using these groomed trails using Crown Land! Wow! The Hypocrisy is getting better'er and better'er! I urge everyone to take a few minutes today or tomorrow to flood the Spreadsheet! If we can't sled...why should they be allowed to ski!??? Huffing and Puffing down those trails - "moistly" talking and gathering on the trails without the benefit of full PPE. North Bay Health Unit - 705-474-1400 or 1-800-563-2808 Dial 0 to speak to main switchboard - and ask for COVID Call Center. Let's make our own "spreadsheet" with OC members complaining. -

K...so this is interesting! Just called the Nordic Ski Club and asked about their COVID precautions. First, the Clubhouse is closed, however the WASHROOMS are not! Hmmmmm...ok?? Is someone there wiping down the toilets etc every single use? I asked about sanitization of rental equipment ....boots are sanitized but the skis are not. Hmmmm....don’t people handle the skis? What a friggin hypocrite this dude is! I am getting madder by the second! -

I have read that this is the cross country ski club that he belongs to. However, even if that is a rumour, why are they allowed to remain open? Letters and phone calls should be made at the very least! North Bay Nordic Ski Club, 630 Northshore Rd, North Bay, ON. 705-495-0332. Website northbaynordic.ca -

I just sent an email to the editor at the North Bay newspaper that ran our letter last week. Anybody wanting to ask the same or write their own letters or emails can contact him at bcooper@metrolandnorthmedia.com Good morning Brent It would appear that Dr. Chirico is extending the lockdown for “Outdoor Recreation”, again without facts to back this it up. The question is....Why is cross country skiing an allowed activity well all others are not? Is it because he, or a friend or Family member are active members of a Cross Country Ski Club perhaps? I would like an answer to his reasoning behind this decision and I am sure your readers would too! Regards Leanne Ziraldo -

Interesting how he says “outdoor recreation”, however his cross country skiing isn’t included? Hmmmmm....I call BS Doctor! I am sure all his cross country skiing buddies are enjoying the groomed OFSC trails! If you are closing “Outdoor Recreation” then this too should be included you entitled Asshat! -

I am sharing a letter that my hubby "Mr. Giddy" has written to Hon. Christine Elliott. Perhaps others could also send along emails as well January 30, 2021 Hon. Christine Elliott Minister of Health College Park 5th Flr, 777 Bay St, Toronto, ON M7A 2J3 Sent via email to: christine.elliott@ontario.ca Re: North Bay/Parry Sound District closure of OFSC Snowmobile Trails Dear Ms. Elliott: I am writing today to express my concern and disappointment in the above noted closure that Dr. Jim Chirico, Medical Officer of Health has implemented in our region. I am a Councillor with the Town of Kearney, Ontario and the Chair of our Economic Development Committee. I respectfully request that a review of this decision be made personally by at your earliest convenience. This matter is of utmost importance to the Small Businesses and the mental and physical well-being of all that are directly impacted by this unsubstantiated closure. As stated by Premier Doug Ford in his outline of activities that are “allowed” to continue during this lock down – snowmobiling is among the list of activities that are allowed for both a physical and mental health activity. This outdoor activity poses no immediate threat to the spread of COVID, and in fact, it is quite the opposite as snowmobilers are covered head to toe in protective gear including face masks (balaclavas) and full helmets. We are a small town of less than 1,000 residents. To my knowledge, we do not have any current cases of COVID in our community. I find it short-sighted and draconian in imposing these measures without statistical support and without proper justification. This action is extremely detrimental to our Community and others in the Region. It would appear based on the latest statistics that I reviewed that with only 5 active cases of COVID within the Region and ZERO hospitalized cases that this decision was not fact based or science based in my opinion. I would certainly respect this decision had other remedies and/or solutions to mitigate out of region travellers been investigated and the statistics supported the closure – but they do not. There are members of our Community that have mobility issues – and since swimming is not an option during this time, snowmobiling is the only source of their exercise and winter activity during the long winter months. Small business struggles at the best of times in the Northern regions of our Province. Most small business owners rely upon the income that snowmobilers bring to their towns during the long winter to survive. Snowmobiling is more than a uniquely Canadian way to enjoy winter. It is an important contributor to Ontario's economy, generating up to $3.3 billion in economic activity every year. It is understandable that perhaps accommodation would be impacted, however, there are other businesses that will now suffer and may not recover as a direct result of Dr. Chirico’s baseless closure. Gas stations and restaurants are only two of these businesses that come to mind immediately, not to mention the tireless hours of volunteer work and money that the local Snowmobile Clubs have expended to get these trails ready during the course of the year. In closing, I respectfully request that a review this decision immediately and perhaps direct Dr. Chirico to reconsider his stand on this matter in the immediate future so that business and local residents can perhaps salvage what is left of winter for snowmobilers, which happens to be a short season during a normal year. Your reply to this matter would be appreciated at your earliest convenience. Respectfully, Paul M. Ziraldo Councillor, Town of Kearney -

Maybe I missed it and this has already been done....but I see lots of folks sending letters, emails and phone calls to Chirico.....but has anyone also been sending to the Ontario Ministry of Health Christine Elliot? I haven’t seen many posts about flooding her office with emails and phone calls. Time to go over his thick head! mailto:Christine.elliott@pc.ola.org or call (905) 853-9889 -
Well I had a horse farm...I could help. I know how to muck out a stall! lol.

Me too me too!!!

I would suggest calling around to see. not sure since we are all supposed to stay home

Yes it is sad. Edgewater Park Lodge in Kearney has cancelled reservations and now closed the restaurant because of the D11 closure until the lockdown is over. Very sad. Lots of jobs lost as well as revenue for these small businesses that rely on the snowmobile season to help them through the winter months.
-
Yes. It wouldn’t be good if someone made the trip and we’re not aware they were not there.
-
Agreed. I was told they were turning them back at the Info Center not on the Highway.
-
-
I heard they were turning back trucks with trailers at the info center in Emsdale at the Kearney exit. I did not witness this personally, but was told by very reliable source. Also, OPP patrols in Kearney as well
-
They were in town of Kearney today on sleds and sitting at trail junctions with patrol cars ...they were not doing RIDE at these two separate places, just watching for sleds.

Just as FYI. OPP were patrolling Kearney today in 2 separate spots. One was a patrol sitting on the road where the D crosses and another with two with their sleds also sitting at a main junction. They are taking it seriously and will enforce the law. -

It is not just “North Bay Sledders”....This region is huge! D11 runs down to Novar so it impacts trails much farther south than North Bay or Mattawa as well....And certainly impacts Highland Rovers SC as half their trails are in D11 and the other in D7. This club should at the very least be exempt from this ridiculous closure based on that alone. This entire decision was made by obviously someone that has a personal issue with sledders and just wanted any excuse to close it down. At least the Simcoe Muskoka Health unit has more common sense with what the impact will be to the local businesses and human mental health. You could probably lick a sledder and not get Covid. I consider myself in full PPE when I am sledding. As a woman...just try peeing on the side of the trail and see how much gear you have to go through just so you don’t wet yourself. -

I was thinking the exact same thing! There are loads more places to access D11 trails for Hwy 11 further south that have seen far more traffic without any complaints.
