  1. I'm doing Gaspe for the 3rd time this winter...4 of us going this time (3 buddies from upstate NY, and yours truly.) Starting our ride on Feb 26 from Mont-Joli again this time...only an extra 30 minutes drive east of Rimouski, and avoids the less interesting open country from RDL. Doing a modified loop due to the Murdochville - to - La Cache trail closure (damn!!) But we'll get to do the entire length of 597, and the absolute best part of the north shore (between 595 & 597) both ways (yahoo!), and we're avoiding the much less interesting south shore altogether... won't go any farther west down there than Chandler. Taking 6 days to do about 1,500 kms, so we can really enjoy the spectacular scenery. BTW, one of our favourite hotel stops on the north shore is Hotel-Motel Grande-Vallee. Beautiful setting overlooking the harbour, and awesome cuisine...worth checking out.

    Re:Leaf, I think it's more than a rumour. I have heard from a reliable source that L125 is not expected to be open at any time this season, due to logging.

    LOL...probably true. But they're likely to be touching each other and the trailer walls in several spots, which is sure to create some "rash" in those spots from moving up and down over bumps on the road...to say nothing of what happens in a panic braking situation.

OK, I gotta ask...with 2 sleds in a 6 X 12 trailer, positioned as shown in the pic Zertrider posted above, how on earth is it  possible to tie them down properly to keep them from bouncing around while on the road, and likely damaging each other and/or the sides of the trailer? Also, Stoney raises a good point about weight distribution...I would be concerned there's not enough tongue weight to be safe on the road.

    This is surprising...I'm 6'3" with a 35" sleeve length, and the Klim XL jackets fit me perfectly, in both sleeves and body.

    Also, the block heater has been well covered by several posts already. I had one on my Apex, (999cc) worked great. My buddy and his 1049cc Vector (2010) the ECU seemed confused by the different air and water temps, and was a bit difficult to start.

    At Cochrane -38c, 80% of all of the 4S and 2S sleds in the Westway parking lot didn't start. Mine, even with the Boost pack (pictures already posted somewhere here), I had to get the hair dryer blowing into the breather box (opening panels at -38c on the Yams not that easy).

     

    But all of that aside, the biggest reason I install a block heater is that the wear on a motor occurs at cold start-up, so if I can keep the motor a bit warm at any temp below about -25c, I will, I also carry the Boost pack. I accept that with Syn oils these days, not as much a factor as the mineral oil days.

    But hey, if I didn't carry a GPS, Ear buds, boost pack, battery charger, extension cord, heated jacket and gloves, I would have to change my name from Gadgetman. :-)

    Gadgetman,  not sure if you ever met sledjunk (may he RIP), but you two would definitely be kindred spirits...

    And my point is, in case you haven't figured out, that it's far better to be constructive, rather than putting the idea in somebody's head about how they might possibly defeat this DESS lock. Your posts are often very technically instructive and helpful...too bad that wasn't the case this time.

    If so a passer by could pry it up and break off the post rendering the sled useless ruining a trip.  Think of what a screwdriver could do.  Better sleep with one eye open.

    Why do you have to be so negative?...given the circumstances, surely this better than nothing.

    You might want to retract your second comment above...they arrived late because of a security alert -- a suspicious package (thought to be a potential bomb) was discovered near the cenotaph.

    I have a few of the micro relays packed as well. I havent heard of issues w/ them, but I think the larger relays BRP used started to crap out after 3 seasons.

     

    BTDT (actually witnessed) an Apex that needed the 'hair dryer treatment' back in 2010. I don't know if the owner ever took any steps to rectify the cold weather starting issues. He still has the sled (40th Anniversary Edition) but for all intents is out of sledding.

    X 2 on carrying the power pack, a few extra relays, and some spare fuses. I don't bother with booster cables anymore, since the power pack does the job, and is much smaller and lighter. It came in very handy one morning in Gowganda, after a -32 overnight low. I was lucky, as my sled was the only one that started...had to boost the other 3 in the group, using the power pack, and it did the job. As I recall, the emblem on the front of the other 3 sleds resembled tuning forks...;-)

    Every time I've been to Quebec saddle-bagging, I see lots of those on the trails (often couples touring) and doing utility duties at hotels and relais.

    Hey, probill...it was great to meet and chat with you at the Advantage as well.  Glad you and your wife got to enjoy all of the local Kap and Hearst loops.  Would love to connect with you again next year...perhaps up north again, and down here in Simcoe/Muskoka on our local trail system. 

     

    As revrnd has rightly pointed out, I can't take any credit for his ice hammer, although I do like to spread the word about how useful it is.

    Glad you enjoyed the loops! We had an older couple @ the Moonbeam clubhouse tell us about the L trails many years ago. I found out about the Hearst loops on my 3rd trip up there in '02. I haven't ridden much in Muskoka, so that might be on the plan in the future.

    I've been meaning to talk to you about this...time to re-negotiate our commission arrangement...8-)
