  1. Dirty dozen out and about in the French/Sudbury trails. Got a trip saving snowfall on Thursday night. Hat's off to the local clubs for scrambling and grooming it out! Bubby moose out for a snowy stroll.

  2. The daughter and I staged from Raven today and ended up doing 180km when we returned to the truck. Surprisingly the trails were actually pretty good - yes, some not so good, but plenty of good to really good trails to make the drive well worth it! As Steve F6 said, D101B from ASC shelter to around 63 was mostly good, in either direction beyond these points, some new snow is needed for sure and some cold. 65 loop was great, some thin spots, but most of it was good, like it usually is. I considered the 66 loop but never did it.....must do it on the next run up there. 64/68 were good too. 77 needs some snow and cold for sure. Planned to grab lunch at Boiler room, but was closed until 4 I think. Grabbed gas at Shell / Webster's Beacon with the plan to scoot across LOB via 76 to get some food at Zachary's, tried to call them to see if open, but just vm.....daughter was hungry and did not want to risk running that way to have no food options so we noticed Webster's Beacon has a pretty good selection of food, so grabbed lunch there instead.....all done and said with, $14.00 for the food plus $10.00 tip, figured I would have spent at least $50 at the Boiler Room, so that turned out well! Trails were pretty quiet, passed 6 to 10 groups I would say, all spaced apart quite a bit. The one thing that struck me was all the riders/groups we passed were riding very respectful - I usually try to get in and out the last few years by noon or 1PM due to the number of yahoos you come across after lunch on the weekends, seems to happen on every ride, but not today! Saw a dead deer on the side of the trail that must have got hit by a sled fairly recently (last night) since most of the body was still intact. It was on the D101B between 60 and 61. Anyone know what is the deal with tracked side by sides riding the trail and what what appears to be a plowed section of D101B between 65 & 63 for I assume vehicles perhaps to get to their cottage - never witnessed this before on this section? Also noticed Bear Lake road (trail 64) is now plowed by I assume the cottage association a lot further than the usual 100/150 feet from Livingston lake road that is/was used by local cottagers to park? I do not think it is for logging..... Just a few pictures from the day.

  4. Son and I staged out of Baysville Monday and looped up around Kearney and back. Traffic was light and trails overall were better than what we expected. Road runs were not great but passable. Also saw the dead deer and there were about 20 ravens performing natures clean up. Guess they call it Raven Lake for a reason. Coming back on Lake of bays there was a small herd of deer that jumped on the lake to catch the last of the afternoon sun. In total did 237 km. With the snow in the forecast this week this area should be in good shape for a while.

  7. We rode those trails as well on Sunday had a great day with friends and family. Roads were getting bad and corners icy. We saw the deer as well, was fresh when we passed it. Was great to finally get out for a ride in Muskoka. Sudbury bound later this week then our big New Brunswick trip the following week. thanks to all those clubs for their hard work

  8. Below is the latest forecast from Instant Weather Ontario. Good evening! We've got a quick update and adjustment to our map for the upcoming winter storm to impact Southern Ontario between Wednesday and Thursday. ZOOMABLE MAP: https://scontent.fyto1-2.fna.fbcdn.net/.../332306427... Based on the latest model data from today, we are noticing a slight northern trend in the track of this system. This means that the heavy snow shifts towards regions north of Lake Simcoe while the GTA is now firmly in the ice pellet and freezing rain mix. For the ice storm threat, the highest concern is from Sarnia through London into K/W and Hamilton. These areas could see over 12 hours of steady icing starting Wednesday late morning and continuing through to Thursday. With ice accretion ranging from 10-25mm combined with wind gusts of 50-70km/h, we will likely see some power outages in the hardest-hit regions. We are also seeing some models mixing in rain for Deep Southwestern Ontario (Windsor, Chatham etc.) and along the Lake Erie shoreline. This will ultimately come down to a fraction of a degree with the temperature in determining the precipitation type making this a very tricky forecast. We do know that *someone* will see significant freezing rain from this event, but we can't pinpoint those locations just yet. The overall freezing rain risk should become clearer overnight into tomorrow as more of the higher-resolution models come into range, allowing us to analyze the micro-level dynamics. More details shortly!

  9. So what's everyone think of some of the new offerings? Highlights I liked. - can get an X model renegade with the 130 hp motor. This let's you get upgraded shocks and a 1.5" ice ripper without getting stupid on power or purchase price. Just need them to offer this with smart shocks now. - 4 strokes in the gen 5 - nice to see brp entering the electric market. Long long ways to go but it's a start - bringing the ride lights to the handlebar guards is a neat idea. Would be nice to see them offer them on the windshield mounted mirrors as well. Would be a better location. Not everyone uses hand guards - I like the integrated helmet communicators. The fact that they will be powered by your heated shield is a big bonus. No more battery issues with communicators. Wonder what the new Oxygen helmet will be priced at that incorporates these. Not sure what to think of the methanol cooling trick (water system) for the new 850 turbo. Would be interesting to know what the mixture of water to methanol is. Really neat technology. Have to question a couple things though. - methanol burns with a clear flame (like hydrogen you can hardly see the flame in daylight). Seems like a new safety risk to me. Apparently it will burn up to a 4 to 1 mixture of methanol to water - is injecting water into your motor a good idea? I'm sure BRP's engineers have thought this out. Just makes you wonder what that does to long term reliability. Will be neat to see what Polaris brings to the market with their release.

  10. Doo you s'pose there is any other group (maybe skiers I s'pose?) that search a dozen weather sites for the one with the most favorable predictions, and then going with that one?

  11. That is not true! If it was there would be no trails open. Do you really think that trails are intentionally kept closed after all the VOLUNTEER work has been put into them?

  12. Wife and I had a great weekend at the Edgewater in Kearney. We were told lots of people cancelled because of the rain, so it was very light traffic all weekend which was nice. Trails were damn near perfect, best riding this season so far. Sorry to brag fellas, but it really was fantastic! Highland rovers & almaguin district did it right for the family day weekend. Not going to lie, there were a few sections (burks falls & Dwight) that could’ve been better, but I think there just wasn’t a lot of snow in those areas, there never really is going through towns. Friday nights ride was a chilly -19 and we only did about 50kms. Sled was completely dead Saturday morning after the cold night, but a guy brought over his jumper and it basically fired right up. Brand new battery in the sled this year too, but we all know the cold kills batteries. That guy saved our weekend, Thankyou if your reading this! Saturday was a 200km day and warmer, and then we just buzzed around close to Kearney on Sunday and did about 85kms. Friday & Saturday we’re pretty good, but Sunday was just mint! I love long rides with the guys, but cruising at 50km on a perfectly groomed trail with the wife, sun shining, temperature hovering around 0….couldn’t ask for a better ride! If anyone is wanting good trails over the next couple weeks, I would highly recommend going to Kearney. Lots of snow and cold in the forecast and they have a wicked base! It will only get better from here.

  14. This is kind of funny, and this is not because I now ride a DOO - but this year the number of DOO's I see on the snow is quite high compared to others. On the QC ride we did, CAT/YAMI was second for sire (all 4-strokes) and POO was third....but a far cry from the number of DOO's we seen. Here in our back yard, POO and CAT are closer but DOO is still far more popular to see. Chalk it up to coincidence or timing, not sure, just what I noticed. Perhaps delivery issues the last couple years is the reason for this & the lopsided numbers, it did seem DOO did a better job of delivering new iron, not perfect I know, just higher percentage. POO does have an awesome looking sled though, love the options the rider has to pick from too.....and sounds like it might be the best trail sled too on the snow.

  15. Now Ski Doo has a tank to put the Kool Aid in on the sled!

  16. I watched the video quickly last night. Did not put much thought into the 2-strock since I don't ride one and do not plan to change - for those that do or will, look intriguing for sure but with that much power adder to a 2-stroke, I have my reservations GEN5 on 4-stroke is nice and I think expected (makes you wonder why they waited a year though....) MXZ now have two skid length options for those looking for the longer track 95% of all renegade are now 4-stroke (just Enduro has 2-stroke) Light signals is a great add on, but I agree would be nice to be tied to the sled vs. hand guards They talked about going back to better shock packages I thought for the MXZ, I wonder if this is really accurate I heard something about the gauge and some new features pertaining to tracking other riders like the POO has (I think this is new at least) I also heard about seat changes, hopefully on the Renegade as the one on mine could be be firmer and a tad higher Have not looked yet but I wonder what the price tag is for the new iron..... Not sure what else I recall hearing from the nice ladies.

  17. My FIL had a turbo as well. Between him and the guy that owns it now, 11000 miles with zero problems

  18. Ya, no newer Poo here for this guy. Antiquated old Cat - kids get all the new stuff

  19. Yipes, 26k and no smart shock option. Ski Doo needs to bring in more color options, give Polaris credit for that. Makes my Mach look like a bargain. Will be interesting to see what Polaris has to offer

  25. X3. I have a TC167 and it’s only a couple hundred pounds heavier but it will carry 3 sleds in a pinch. Looks very similar to that Bullett trailer. I have never pulled it with a four banger and don’t know anyone who has, having said that it’s probably only 3000# loaded but you may have to budget for new front brakes every spring hauling with a lighter vehicle or buy one with trailer brakes.

  26. I'm heading to Cochrane for a saddlebag trip from Cochrane to Kap To Hearst and back. Heading up Wednesday Feb 22 and returning Monday Feb 27th. The two guys I planned to with backed out. I have a truck and trailer to accommodate 2 additional sleds. We'll be meeting up with Irreverent and crew in Kap. If interested in joining, PM me for further details.

  27. Narrow is better especially with a small tow vehicle. I have 2022 Ram crew diesel and it gets better mileage towing my 7X27 Legend than towing my 8X12 lightning.

  29. Hit and run! A good friend of mine is currently in the hospital (Mont Laurier) after a hit and run on the #13 trail just north of Neuve Ferme at 4pm, yesterday, Friday Feb 17th. Sled that hit him was blue, he thinks it looked like a Polaris but who knows. His injuries include all of his ribs are broken and a punctured lung. He's currently in intensive care and will be for weeks to come. Anyone with knowledge of this please let me know or better yet, the Mt Laurier police. It has been reported of course. This is unacceptable and a hit of this magnitude would not go UN-noticed. Please help! These idiots have to be stopped or next time it will be our wives or daughters. After this, my sleds will be up for sale.
