  1. We stayed at the Advantage this year and are booked in there for next weekend. It was a favourite of Sledjunk for years and I can see why, nice and simple, very affordable and great location.

  4. We rode up to the Blyth/Wingham area yesterday. By the time we got back into St.Clements trails the drop in snow amount just from morning leaving to afternoon was evident. I left the sled on the driveway in the sun when I got home and the undercarriage was mostly melted off by the time I put it away. There was activity in a number of sugar bushes we went through along the way.

  5. I like the Top A ...it holds fond memories of my first ride of the season for 6 out of the last 8 years, usually Christmas day, while others languish uselessly with their families. ug. Leaving the Advantage or the Apollo motel and heading west toward Hearst feels like an old friend after 9 months of no riding. I have done the other trails too....just letting you know so I don't get dumped into that low "tourist" level of the sledding hierarchy - a big bruise to my self esteem...thanks revrnd...but the A trail will always have a special place in my heart. Gonna ride it tomorrow morning as a matter of fact. Four inches of new snow, -20 or so this evening, trails should be deep and crisp and even.

  6. Kind of wish they offered other colours on the Renegade X.....but Black it will be, maybe see about adding some accents at a later date. Should go well with my Black & Green Cat riding gear

  7. you guys should find out when their meetings are and get together and go. Unfortunately, sometimes you need to beg to be allowed to help. Get some new blood in there. I wish I lived where there was lots of snow, I enjoyed being involved and would do so again if there was snow. It's worth the effort, even if it seems pointless to go through the hoops to be involved.

  9. Walking distance to eats & TOP A is across the road w/ no curb to deal w/. When we stayed there a few winters ago, I couldn't believe the improvements done. Stayed @ the previous establishment on my 1st trip in 2000 & it was not a pleasant night, sway back bed & it sounded like the transports were driving thru the parking lot. Everything is good now & would recommend it in a heartbeat.

  10. The reality is cases are down globally by 77% in the past 6 weeks almost simultaneously regardless of whatever lockdown, mask or social distance nonsense they are trying to pass off.

  17. One of my co-workers was up there w/ a gang playing in the canyon. I guess 1 of them misjudged the top of the hill & went over the top & collided w/ a tree on the downhill. Somehow they were able to recover the sled & tow it out to the road. The rider was OK, but no way could the sled be steered back to Cochrane. I guess some OPG guys came along & saw their predicament. They were told if they could get the sled over to a building, they could possibly help. Turns out they were able to straighten out the front end enough that he COULD ride it back.

  19. I agree with Wildman, sounds like you want to help, just show up at a meeting or if you see trail work getting done, stop and get involved. If there are 3-4 of you on this forum alone, that might add alot of help to the club, possibly make a huge difference. For instance, on the club I'm involved with, until this year there were two of us responsible for over 100 kms. We would have family help out, sometimes the 2 groups would get together for larger jobs. Sometimes a pain in the a$$ job, but with family and or friends, can be a good time as well. Good luck, hope it works out, and thanks for wanting to be involved. There's always room for more.

  28. After taking OC Member @Evils advice, we stayed at the Super 8 this past weekend. Which is the old Queens. The owner of the Companion Inn owns both. We have always stayed at the Companion Inn, and this time decided to see what @Evil had been trying to tell us for a while. We really enjoyed the Super 8. Rooms are much larger, and its just something different. You can still use the Companion Inns amenities, and we did. We had the Companion Inn booked for our next toot, in 2 weeks, but have since changed our rooms to the Super 8. The rooms are much larger, and you can take the sledders package, and get vouchers to spend at the Companion Inn. We like both, but liked the larger rooms of the super 8.

  35. Yes and tick off the locals. As has been suggested, limit motels and you'd stop the sledders coming up from the dirty south. Who's going to drive up from the GTA for a day ride? Also why didn't the other MOHs not do the same? Simcoe/Muskoka MOH didn't close the trails there & I think people were more concerned with the variants in Barrie. The trails were open in Hali', Peterborough & Hastings counties. No discussion from the officials there and a lot closer for daytrippers. Parking lots full in the morning, empty @ 6 PM. This guy was all on his own in his decision making. I have been abiding by the measures, but when something as heavy handed as this is enacted, it doesn't go over to well. Reminds me of kids saying I'll jump in if you do. One kid jumps in & rest of them stay on the dock. He shut down the trails & no one else followed suit.

  39. All this talk aboot the new Mach Zed, but I don't think that anyone has mentioned the new Lynx? I know that most of y'all are more aboot fast trails than boondocking, but Shirley there's a boondocker on here - somewhere.... Other than SDB, as he rides those green things.... Not a week or so ago I was reading in Snowtech why you won't see a Lynx model sold west of the Atlantic. Then my chum texts me aboot maybe buying a Lynx. What? I can see him buying a Lynx to have for heading North. (Algoma) He likes to have the new tech. We picked up a factory demo sled from Fast in Eveluth, Minnisnowta once back around 2003? A mountain sled called the "Blade". Has an 800 Poo in it. No chaincase? Or running backwards? .. something odd aboot it anyway... He said that he just sold his 600 Summit that he kept around for going north, so maybe? Or he will bring an 800 165 Summit that he keeps in Colorado - like a 2015 maybe? That last I knew was almost through "break-in" (He found 174 soon after, and has ridden that exclusively since) and bring it back home for North, and buy a Turbo for out there. He just found out that they have been selling OEM turbo's. LOL! He hasn't bought a new sled in maybe 5 years or so. Has to be an all time record for him! Same guy showed up at my shop one day - aboot 15 yrs ago, and says "I'm thinking aboot buying sumpthing". But he wasn't sure, new bike? (he did buy an ATK) Sled? ATV? He wasn't sure what, but wanted to buy a new toy of some flavour.... First world problems I guess eh? Fast Blade in the rear. I think that he still has it? .

  40. The young lady that got this done is our new external relations manager at the OFSC Kirsten Baker. She is known for working tirelessly to get the job done. Kirsten joined the OFSC from working for Scott Aitcheson our MP for Parry Sound Muskoka. The OFSC is lucky to have her.

  42. Free ride is closer to a summit. Backcountry is more of true crossover from trail. I agree seems to be a lot of model overlap. Keep in mind we are a small market segment here in Ontario. I took my 146 backcountry to Golden BC for month of March last year. When you spend time in the west you can see how much more application there is for these models. Shared a couple pics..just because.

  43. Booked one of the small luxury chalets at La Bannik for just under a week and here are our thoughts: Cottage, albeit a tad small was very nice and clean, Everything worked and your own personal hot tub is awesome. Nice propane fireplace and heated floors was a nice reception when we got back from a day on the trails. Only negative was the size and lack of cooking abilities other than a microwave and toaster oven. They do offer a cottage with a full kitchen but its 2 bedrooms and a loft. Better for a family and of course, more expensive. The food (Dinner) - We opted for the snowmobile pkg which included a "full breakfast" and dinner. Found out that over 1/2 the items on the menu had an up-charge. Valentines dinner was a pre-fix with most of the regular menu missing. This offering has a substantial up-charge which we were forced to take. This was not a problem based on the menu as all the offerings looked excellent! Upon ordering we were informed that the appetizer (Shrimp Cocktail) was sold out (7:30pm) and they would sub in a salad (Chef or Ceasar). No discount. The salad was iceburg lettuce and a few grape tomatoes. The rest of the meal was totally under whelming, my wife's steak was tough and covered, smothered in some kind of sauce. My duck confit was spot on but its the type of thing thats made off-site. Chef liked to use a sweetend balsamic glaze over everything,,, yukk. We ate there again the following night, same experience. We both opted for the upcharged filet mignon; it was sirloin steak. Not tenderloin. 3rd night we thought.. " no more upcharges" lets order something safe.. We both ordered the chicken supreme, again horrible, left most of it behind. Way overcooked and again, smothered in some kind of sauce and the ever present sweet glaze. Our final nights we ate grocery store food we bough in town. The food (Breakfast) - The full breakfast, delivered daily to you chalet consisted of 1 sausage on a english muffin and a similar item on a bagel. A huge muffin, some fruit cups or if you're lucky a couple of yoghurt. This is all delivered the afternoon before your breakfast, they put it in the fridge. Hmmm, 5 star and I have to mic a day old breakfast sammy and make my own coffee. Wow! The wine - the only alcohol we purchased was from their wine list in the resto. Some good selections to be had with fair pricing. The service - overall the people were extremely nice, even during checkout when I claimed by distaste for the food, ALL of the food. I even ordered a plate of fries and I couldn't eat them. They had so much seasoning on them it was disgusting. Before I get into the other reviews we did call around to other places that stated that due to COVID, there were't taking anyone from ONtario. So it was slim pickin's even though they were in a Orange zone. Had a hot breakfast in town at La Gaufriere. Crepes are their specialty so that's what I ordered, a large fruit crepe. First off, not whipped cream on top but whipped topping. OMG, really? Custard filling was way to sweet and it contained fruit like watermelon, cantaloup, grapes. OMG again. And this is their signature. My wife ordered a simple western omlette that was grossly over cooked. Didn't go back. Last day we had lunch in Notre-dame du nord at Rendez-Vous Des Quinze. We both orded cheese burger specials and spit an order of fries. Burgers were home-made, buns super fresh, and topped perfectly. Fries were cut in-house and delicious. I would of ordered a 2nd burger if I knew it wouldn't hurt me later

  46. Not sure if you are looking for a place to stay in Hearst... We stayed last year at the Companion.. Heated Garage for the sleds and bar/restaurant on site. 5 minute walk to the LCBO. We enjoyed our night there. As sor the trails.. I absolutely loved L123 & L125 in Kap.
