revrnd
Unloaded @ the MTO yard near Ormsby today w/ Lake St Peter as the destination. I rode south to Ormsby Jct (where TOP E turns west). Considering what I was to find later, I should've either rode back towards Coe Hill or ridden south until I ran out of snow. Quite a few sleds @ The Hideaway in Coe Hill. There were 3 rigs parked in the school parking lot. I guess this is OK on the weekend for staging? Looking south @ Ormsby Jct. Looking north: TOP E heading towards Bancroft south of Quarry Rd: CNR van @ Bancroft. Lots of sleds @ the Granite & no issues dealing w/ traffic comming or going thru Bancroft. Some days it's a real PITA. Surprisingly the railbed wasn't bad thru Bancroft up to the airport, then it got a bit choppy north to Birds Creek. From the highway crossing north it was POOCHED! Not just @ the road crossings where guys are accelerating, but on the straights too. I turned around between Graphite & Maynooth. While I was stopped 2 doos rode by heading south. I caught up to them as they were loading their sleds @ the parking lot. I asked them where they had ridden to. They say Barry's Bay & before I had chance to ask, they said it was the same all the way there On the way up, it looked like TOP E east had been groomed so I ventured out towards Bessemer. This is by the fields before the 933 turnoff:
revrnd
Looking east near the Bessemer mines: Heading back to the main railbed on TOP E: Looking west: Southbound on TOP E above Mackenzie Lane. I think this is Spring Lake. You could feel a bit of gravel in the snow, but nothing terrible. Turning off for the highway: Back to the truck. 130 klicks for the day. On the way north I met a couple of large groups southbound by Jan Woodlands. On the way home it appeared that the trail south of Bancroft is holding up well. TOP E east was a bit icy in spots. Just north of Detlor, there is an icy patch developing in a small rock cut. One little flowage north of Brinklow Rd, but nothing terrible. Up north around Hybla or Graphite there was a 'hole' in the moguls that could quite easily throw a rider off their sled if they were travelling @ a good clip. The ITG shows the Maze as red, but TOP E has been groomed. Something I hadn't noticed before, but there was an Old Hasting New Holland parked in a yard @ a house on TOP E east. Sneaks
nice report and great envy inducing pics. Really hoping for a positive turn in the weather soon down south here (and across ontario for that matter.) Missing the seasons a few years back with some consistency and hoping they're not gone for good. Keep the pics/reports coming they help me live vicariously through others until I can get out. We got a couple of inches of snow tonight, so it should be OK. Hopefully Maple Leaf gets out & grooms. 2 hours ago, Sneaks said: nice report and great envy inducing pics. DOOBEE
Thanks for the report. Might do a day up there this week. It has looked the same up there for a month now. Not sure conditions are any better than they were in early December. The area where you stopped with fields on the E near the 933 is called Hamlins Flats and was a siding for lumber way back. The next property on the E east of there is owned by my family. My season in Ontario often ends right in that spot. I can remember sitting there many late spring nights knowing it was my last kick at those trails for the season....then back to Quebec for several more! That's cool that you have a connection to that area. We've ridden thru there a lot. Either up to McArthurs Mills & further or working our way south thru "The Maze". I think the last time I rode up there was a few years ago when a diamond drilling rig was set uip on the trail west of there. Do you know where the Bessemer and Childs mines were located? DOOBEE
That is a special spot to me. My family has been there for over 70 years. You passed the Bessemer mine on your way there. From the flats, it's back west on the E a few kms where there is a lake on the north side (Mullet lake). You can see a tailings pile from the trail on the north east end of the lake. If you look carefully through the trees on the south side you can also find the foundation for a hotel that was never finished. The Childs mine is few kms to the east of that spot, down the road the trail doesn't follow. Not much to see there other than a marsh now. Across the road from that is the Rankin mine, it's got lots of exposed fools gold in the cut. Really interesting area. A good read on Bessemer and some maps can be found in a coffee table book by Dave Hanes. Hopefully we can connect for a loop.
revrnd
Staged @ the Paudash clubhouse & rode up towards Tory Hill. Didn't make it to Wilberforce as I didn't want to be riding up & back on the freshly groomed 606 (railbed). Saw 5 other sleds out. The new routing @ the top of 608 between Hwy 118 & the railbed is a bit rough. Be careful as there are a couple of tricky spots. Take your time, stay off the icy spots & you'll be OK. Be careful east of these ponds as there are a few water/ice flows across the trail. A larger 1 @ the west end of the little bridge.

revrnd
Rode out of the village on snow! Snowing tonight, so tomorrow should be good to go. Met ChandosRob at the clubhouse & did some signing on the NEW route for TOP E south of Harcourt (which is now open) No more road running up the the Hadlington Road. 114 klicks for the ride. revrnd
Out to do some 'coldish' weather testing today (the high was -15). Rode down to Nephton. The parking area just east of 702 is plowed & there was 1 rig parked there. Conditions north to Apsley were good. I crossed the road & rode a bit. Turned around just before the rail crossing. 74 klicks for the day. The Buckhorn District groomer was on the Haultain trail west of E107. Sun was in & out. Later I found out the GoPro had moved so it was facing low when the pics would've been nice & sunny Anyways w/ the muffs installed, I wanted to see how thinner gloves worked. I was wearing the Mpacts for most of the ride. Warmers were set about mid-range. Even w/ the 'open' wrists, I didn't feel any cold intrusion. However later on I felt my hands cooler on the forest access road, higher speeds & possibly lower temp. I switched to the other gloves & my hands were fine. No problems getting my hands into & out of the muffs. I had the thicker 'doo gloves w/ me but didn't bother to try them. I'll just take the Reimas (just in case). I also had the Unwind balaclava on that I bought @ Cabin Fever (the 'doo dealer in Kap') on the way home last March. I'm not sure if anyone else wears their stuff, but irREVerent recommended them. I prefer the more open style, but I'll be able to use this 1 w/ the MX helmet. Today I just pulled the 'face guard' down a bit. I didn't feel any cold on my neck. In the past I had been using a separate 'dickie' & cotton balaclava. I was finding this was bulky where the 2 articles overlapped.
revrnd
Question for the riders using the muffs, do you notice snow accumulating in them? When using the Chokos gauntlets, we'd get snow collecting inside of them? The only time we used them was up north. Not sure if it was the snow conditions and/or speeds we were travelling? The Doo muffs have a cuff around them that helps with that. Unfortunately after enough use, the muffs started to wear through my Klim jacket. I haven't noticed that happening. My jacket is bulky at the wrists so maybe it fills the hole a bit better. About the UnWind balaclavas, we have them too. Excellent product. I prefer the open face style, because it works better with my Modular 3 and the breath box. Wife wears a MX Hybrid helmet and prefers the closed style like your pic. Either way they just work well. No cold intrusion or wind.

revrnd
A lovely way to start the day Couldn't bear to ride on Welfare Weekend? (southbound) E107 Bailey Bridge A REV (no not me) on TOP E TOP E approaching Hwy 28 Paudash Trail Blazers BBQ My favourite BRP paint scheme Old meets new. '07 MXZ (like my previous sled) w/ my Buzzard in the background Video shows buddy on his Indy Lite crossed up coming out of the corner. From now on all Poos will have this warning label on dash: "DO NOT LOOK AT CLUSTER FOR WARNING MESSAGES" Joe Poo Rider told his buddies (when the came back) that he noticed a warning message looked down & the next thing he knew he was off the trail (on road allowance) Actually 2 of us were able to easily get him out. I rode up to Tory Hill & when I returned they were in the same spot. I had been worried about meeting them again on the trail as they pretty much disappeared after they passed me a few minutes earlier. Drizzle started around this time, which made for less than stellar visibility. I ran Eels to the boat ramp & then made the executive decision to run Chandos. Drizzle had eased up, but the light was kind of flat. Running was good though. Tucked in for the night
