2018 Kapuskasing Adventure

All good things must come to an end. Im heading back south in the morning but the rest of the crew are sticking around & planning to head towards Cochrane on Mon'.

No mishaps & a lot of miles/klicks & laughs. Stopping in to the the former D15 helper tomorrow before leaving Kap'.

The only disheartening thing we saw so far was 2 rigs pulled over on the southbound side of 11 near Matheson. Looked like some guys were working on a 4 place trailer late in the afternoon. After our trailer problems back in '12, I felt bad for them.

Headed off to Cochrane for lunch at Terry's.  Along the L123, there were two moose on the trail.  We stopped and watched them for a few minutes until they wandered off into the bush.  ApeXMAN was able to snap a couple of photos that hopefully he will add to this thread.

When we got to Cochrane, we found that Terry's was closed.  Not sure if they are not open on Monday's or if something has changed.  We had lunch at JR's.  Not a big fan of that place but it was sled accessible.

Sinto or something else. Not Amsoil, I've seen a sled running it, no smell.

The 3 of us have run Amsoil Interceptor. We never really had any 'description' for its smell. When I had the 1st SDI & was running XPS full or semi-synthetic, even I thought that (fill in the blank) smelt like (fill in the blank)!

Cool that you saw moose. We spotted 1 in the Mattice years ago.

Had a nice chat w/ Candace @ Cabin Fever. Picked up a new Unwind balaclava as per @irREVerent advice who was told by @Evil to use them. Probably a little late to test this season. LOL

I wondered why you guys were going thru the Petro Pass lot.

The Peterbilt is driven by my childhood friend that lives in North Bay now.

Good thing Jerry's sled sticks out. My friend had just asked me if we ever spotted friends while out riding. I told him of knowing Denis's sled when we met him north of Hearst.

Lots of deer on the east side of 11 north of the Emsdale info centre & east of Limberlost Rd beside Hwy 60. Then on 118 between Canarvon & West Guilford a car had hit a deer.

Rolled into Apsley @ 9:15.

Spotted this on Mon' morning before leaving town:

I had heard about Kap when I was in Grade 1 or 2. The father of a classmate spent his winters up @ the Cold Weather Centre. Now people shake their heads when I tell them about heading up there during the winter. :D

Today we waited until it warmed up to -25C.  Then we headed to Hearst.  As we neared Hearst, the vibration that I felt when we first started off suddenly got much worse and the RPMs dropped.   If I stopped, it was difficult to get going again so I limped into Hearst.  I took off the belt guard, and the problem was evident.  The PB-80 clutch had failed and the clutch was jammed partway closed.  Luckily, our friend Denis was accommodating and let us into his garage.  We removed part of the clutch and found it was destroyed.

The rest of the crew, Mike1937, Legend09, and grover_yyz, headed back to Kap and picked up my truck and trailer to drive over to rescue me and the sled.

Tomorow, we will scavenge the clutch from Moosifer's sled and install it on mine until he gets up here Friday morning with a spare clutch.

Always an adventure!

BTW, also turned over 25000 KM today.

:(

Any idea how many klicks on the clutch?

You just didn't want to get towed :poke2:

If it was easy Dave, everyone would be up there clogging up the trails. I couldn't believe the temp when Denis posted the screen grab. -15* yesterday seems balmy in comparison.

You guys made good time from Kap'. I left town @ 10:05 & you were still @ the restaurant. It was 1 something when you rolled thru the Petro Pass lot. Good thing grover_yyz's sled stuck our or I would've just thought it was just another group of sleds LOL. I hope the weather warms up a bit for you guys & the rest of the week goes better.

Worse come to worse & you couldn't make it to Hearst, you aren't far from Hwy 11 or a sideroad up in the Corridor.

SJ that sucks about your clutch but glad you got to the safe-house in Hearst OK.LOL

Very sorry to hear about this, SJ (I think this is the first time I've ever heard of a PB-80 clutch blowing up.)  At least you've got a back-up readily at hand, and can keep riding.  Looks like you'll have several more days of good riding, judging by the weather forecast...have fun, and stay safe.

Great pic of the cow & calf. I've only seen 1 moose on the Corridor. That was about 10 years ago returning to Hearst after a daytrip to Moonbeam.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the replacement is a PB-80 as well, at least for now.  However, when I go WOT it revs to over 9 grand.  Might put a stock Yamaha clutch on both when they get here.

It "blowed up real good".  The spring retainer had one bolt broken and the other two tabs broke the sides out of the retainer.  Then the three blocks got mangled and jammed in what was left.  Not many good parts salvagable.

Maybe you can settle it down with your other spring or some more weight... that can be done right on the sled ?

After changing the clutch this morning, we headed off to lunch in Moonbeam at Della-Pieta Restaurant.  Then we did a fairly short day by riding the Nursery Loop to L125 back to A then back to Kap.  Short 100 Km loop.

Mike1937, Legend09, and grover_yyz are all heading back home in the morning so I will be alone here until Moosifer arrives Friday morning.

Yes, it can.  But first I will open it up and inspect for any other issues.
