Recommended Posts

My son and I are heading off on a saddle bag on the 15th.

Here is the plan so far.

Leave home (Sudbury) around 2 pm and trailer to Cochrane on the 15th

I expect we will go to Cochrane to base our ride.

Day 1 (19th) do the canyon and then head west towards Kap aprx 320 km

Day 2 Kap to Hearst taking the long way aprx 200 km

Day 3 Hearst to Hornepayne and back aprx 350 km

Day 4 Hearst to Kap again taking the long way aprx 230 km

Day 5 Kap to cochrane aprx 160 km

Leave Cochrane early on the 21st and head home (Sudbury).

After this I have absolutely no idea other than I want to go to Hornepayne or Dubreville  maybe even Wawa ant then back to the truck.

We have to be back home Sunday the 21st by 1 pm for my son to go to work.

If anybody  wants to join in let me know.

Also ideas as to must see or do please post here.

Also looking for recommendations on where to stay.

I will be using ideas from my other post

Cochrane, Westway or the Thriftlodge

Kap- Super 8

Hearst- The Companion

Dub- Relais Magpie

The Greenwater Park lookout is nice in Cochrane, I would stop in and see the Polar bear habitat as well.

Hope this helps.

Sounds good Soup. Would like to make a suggestion for your day 5. Kap to Cochrane is pretty much a half day ride given the quality of the trails. I would suggest fueling in SRF and going south on the C trail to the intersection of A106C and take it back north towards Cochrane to L103. Turn right on L103 and take it to the A  and then go north to Cochrane It would add about 70km. to the day and you would get to travel some trail worth seeing when you are there and have the time IMHO.

I would go to dubrevillue it is an awesome ride from Hornepayne. It is a roller coaster ride with lots of one to two foot hills. It is best part of the trip and magpie relay is awesome. You don't want to miss out and Hearst to duberville is a perfect 300 km ride. Time the trip so you are in kap Thursday to Sunday since noon beam is closed Monday, Tuesday Wednesday.

Can go from Hearst to dubrevillue, then back to Hearst, then back to cochrane. Your son will love the trail to duberville, trust me on this one. Luc does an awesome job of trails, terrain is steller very similar to mountain range in Quebec. It is an amazing ride, don't turn around in hornepayne.

It was best part of my trip from hornepayne to luc ville. The hotel there is real nice too and they have a hot tub. It is luc's grooming and terrain that make trip there stellar.

West way or thrift lodge in cochrane, companion in Hearst, and magpierelay in dub.

You definitely need to go all the way to Dub to see the 'Groomer Guy"!!! It will be the best trails you ever ride in Ontario!

Here's a suggestion for what it's worth Soup:

Stage in Timmins

Night 2  Hearst

Night 3 Dub

Night 4 Kap

Night 5 Cochrane via canyon

Night 6  Home via Timmins

The 3rd day riding would be the largest at about 270 miles

It also saves the drive between Timmins and Cochrane x2

This itinerary gives you the opportunity to shorten and go back to Timmins directly from Kap if for any reason you lost a day earlier in the trip.

That looks good PISTON, I think I am going to use this route for my February trip.

Timmins could definitely be an option depending on trails.

yellow I will ride, red I won't.

Trail status around home doesn't mean much as I know the trails, away from home not so much.

I agree.  There are some nice local loops around both Hearst and Kap (Moonbeam) you might want to try to include.  The ride from Timmins to Hearst is not too bad as the trails are quite fast (50 Km/h).  Dub to Kap is a little long for my taste.

I will likely only ever do this once so want to go as many places as I can.

Your quote above is why I set the suggested itinerary up the way I did Soup. There is really only one big day at 260 miles and it is mostly on trail that you can move along on.  Our group of 4 riders range in age from 61 to 75 and we typically ride 200-250 miles per day on our trips in areas like the northern corridor. We normally get on the sleds between  8:30 and 9:00 AM and are in the rooms before dark with quite a few smoke stops in between. For the Dub-Kap day we would likely start about 8AM.

All that being said, plan a trip that you are comfortable with remembering that the trails up there are not twisty tight trails for the most part. Hope you and your son enjoy your trip. Wish I could get the same opportunity with one / all of my sons.

You'll enjoy the trip. Suggest you make an effort to use the L123 in one direction or the other. You can see my helmet cam video of it if you google apexltx56. Ensure you stop and get the father and son selfies, I still look at mine, years later...In Florida next week keeping someone else happy, before my saddle bag tour mid Feb.

Around Kap take the Nursery Loop -

There are signs all over the place with the various types of trees that have been planted. Pay careful attention.....there is a quiz at the end where you can win prizes...

Someone mentioned the Super 8 as a place to stay - it is great - try to get room 107 or 109 - ground floor, close to exit so you're not sweating up your clothes and (if you beat everyone to a parking spot) you can park outside your room window.

There are a couple of motels at the west end of town - good trail access, drive to rooms, close to restaurant - the Apollo (IQTurbo hates this one) and the Advantage - sledjunk wrote favourably of it last year in case the Super 8 is full or a hockey tournament is in town.

revrnd's guide has a couple more as well.

Enjoy your trip!

Soup,

Sorry to hear that your Northern Corridor trip has been shortened to three riding days, but that might give me the opportunity to meet you, possibly Wednesday evening in Hearst. We (late and mid sixties two gentlemen of distinguished character) are likely doing something similar with Monday and Friday being driving days from/to the GTA, although we usually start out of Sudbury. Are you booking all/any of your accommodation in advance? Companion Hotel Wednesday night? We usually wing it with midweek  accommodations, and haven't had to sleep in a snowbank yet. We do that because some days the miles go by so easily up there, that we cover way more ground than we had planned and are therefore flexible about destinations. If we don't make a plan to hook up, at least keep you eyes open for two not-so-slow old farts on Skidoo 900 aces - one red and one black/yellow. The red one is usually leading because if I lead we usually lose time pulling sleds out of the deep stuff, if you catch my drift.
