ofsc radio listening survey

Received the latest OFSC email & survey - wants folks to indicate which type of radio they listen to - just click on 'don't listen to radio' - might go some way in keeping money being spent in useless ways. Noticed Nutter and his BFF Craig Nicholson in a nice story about trail side butter tarts in the last issue- looks like you started something here Blake G. Good of them to further spread the word seeing as some maintain that few people visit this forum.

Too think this butter tart tourism started many years ago with a friend of mine. She was working for Durham Region Tourism and created a marketing campaign that she won an award for... The Butter Tart Trail. They promoted a driving tour of the region where you drove from butter tart to butter tart shop. Since then it has exploded in concept with things like the Midland Butter Tart Festival, the Blake G. Butter Tart Tour and more.

Riders Plus Motorcyle Insurance had a big Butter Tart tour link on thier Faceplant page few weeks back. So is crossing over on to other powersports.

As for thier radio survey, radio is a dying breed. With so many other options out there now, with internet radio, and services like SiruisXM, Apple Music and Google Music. Radio listernership is fslking every day. People want what they want, they don't want to hear goofy radio ads from some stupid car dealer, or the live remotes from Leon's and The Brick. The radio in my boat doesn't have a way for me to plug my phone in to it (yet). So I've been forced to listen to local stations well at the dock. 80% of the ads are for personal injury lawyers, payday loan companies and pawn shops. If that's radio's target audience, they aren't sleders.

I tend to listen to satellite radio most of the time when driving however when at the lake I like listen to the local radio station The Dock out of Midland. I hear about local events (i.e. Midland Butter Tart Festival, Coldwater Duck Race) and local weather forecasts. When I was working I wouldn't pay more than $90 / year for satellite radio. It wasn't worth any more than that to me when I can listen to other radio for free. Now I paid $30 for 6 months of satellite which is about what it is worth to me.  I won't pay for Apple or Google downloads. I have a massive amount of what I want to listen to on CD, vinyl, cassette and unbelievably 8 track.

I have been using Spotify, much prefer it over Sat radio.

If I'm not mistaken you need internet access to use it and you pay $10 / month. Their web page is less than obvious of how the service works. To each their own but I'm not really interested in downloading music to replay it later. Call me cheap but my cell phone doesn't have a data package. I access to the internet at home or when I stop into places like Timmies or someplace that has free wifi. I don't need to be connected that badly. When I was working the company supplied the smart phone and all the connectivity because I needed it for the job but not anymore.

When I listen to radio I use a station that plays the mix of music I like and let them do all the programming. I just turn it on and listen.

As it pertains to the snowmobile world, personally I don't believe they need to pay to advertise on radio that permits are on sale which is what I get the sense the survey is about. As for Nicholson... I find his radio spots essentially useless. They appear to be aimed at the simple minded who haven't much of a clue to what they are doing. They are Captain Obvious spots.

If the OFSC is going to run ads in any media they need to aim those ads at capturing new snowmobilers rather than preaching to the converted, they loyal and die hard sledder who doesn't need a sales pitch. They need to know the media that the non sledder, who would be a likely convert listens to, reads and watches. This would be the person who has an "outodoor" tendency. Boating, biking, fishing, camping, hiking etc.

I can appreciate the data cost on your phone, in my world with the amount of time I am in the car and for even when we are on the boat, I like the Spotify App and not listening to a bunch of commercials and being able to listen to mixes of music that I prefer, I used to always listen to radio as I do like hearing the local news and contests at times.

Why do you have to continually stream tuff to listen to.  What happened to the mp3 file ?  I have complete albums on my stick plugged into my Somata console and decoded and played through the very good quality sound system.  At least 3000 songs at 255 kbps arranged  in folders with file names that fit the radio display.  You can put them in your not so smart phone and play them on any sound system with an input jack.  You can make them yourself from any CD, record them on your computer from music you stream, or buy them very cheap of the internet from eastern Europe.  You have them forever and you don't bung up the internet bandwidth.

When I switched my last phone I lost all my music files and just haven't bothered to reload them again, Plus the new Jeep doesn't have a Cd player so Spotify works for the time being.

You can also download videos from youtube (youtube downloader) and use the same software to convert to mp3. Works well with older songs not always available as well as others internationally that you might never had heard about before.

The way they have got the survey set up, it looks as if you can make as many responses as you like - pretty slim pickings in choice however.

I think I missed something!

I did their radio survey, or at least I thought I did. Only asked one question, "what type of radio do I listen to?"

when I answered Classic Rock, the survey ended as complete!

Was that the wrong answer?????

Radio.  Please. What a waste of dollars.

Recently purchased my kid a car. All he cared about was whether the radio had an aux cord so he could run spotify.

I totally agree UTS.

Just did the quiet lakes survey. I'm pretty sure they didn't like my comments or answers. Ridiculous drivel going after speedboats when wakeboard boats are the worst thing ever for our lakes.

I assumed my survey and comments were lost.

Again, I totally agree. Why are they complaining about lake noise when you have to listen to cars, trains, airplanes, etc. .....

I enjoy listening to a well tuned engine and I agree there are a bunch of them that are too noisy but you can't throw rocks if you live in a glass house. I don't think loud pipes save lives, they cause a distraction but at least everyone knows you are there. Distractions cause accidents.
