Icy base with fluffy snow sounds fine to me.

When me and my wife left Whitney sunday morning, things did not look good. I would imagine it needing a lot more snow!.

RECENT ACTIVITY ON OPEONGO SNOWBIRDS FACEBOOK PAGE:

We expect to have the trails open again on the weekend... Stay tuned for updates! More snow and cold in the forecast, just be patient for another couple of days!

That's not totally surprising. Usually when a club hasn't opened their trails it's for a reason. When they do open for the first time I have found you need to drive slower than mid season. I see folks with damaged sleds because they ride like the trails are in mint shape.

Nice looking bridge. That first step up is massive.

On the B106E by the Bancroft airport. The original bridge was a short trestle. The southernmost "bent" rotted away & collapsed into the creek last month.

Thanks, I'm sure I have been through there at one time. I'll Google the airport and re-learn.

CN pulled up the tracks in the early 80s & you have to wonder how long before that any work was done. There used to be a fuel delivery yard adjacent to the tracks just south of the Y Road in Birds Creek. That was probably the furthest north of any rail traffic.

I was up to Bancroft today by truck & we checked out the project.

The excavators were spreading gravel @ either end of the bridge.

There was a chap off to the left towards the road. he had jumped the small creek. Another sledder was sitting on the railbed to the north. I think He was pondering whether or not to follow their friend/spouse across the "water hazard".

The railbed has been groomed, and looks OK. Not a thick base though. The snow seems very crusty up there, so I imagine slider & sled cooling could be an issue.
