OFSC Snowmobile App

Anyone using the $2.99 iSnowmobile App?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ca.on.ofsc.isnowmobile

The Google App hasn't been updated since March, 2014 and that makes me go "hmmmm" before purchasing.

Reviews indicate that it doesn't (or didn't) track the rider's location, etc. How are things are at present?

(I'm aware of the fantastic Garmin resources available from member's of this forum. Just wondering how casual riders in populated areas are making out with phone based systems. I've found smartphone boating software fantastic - completed the Trent Severn with paper charts and a Furano but used a $17 app the most. Want to give this snowmobiling product a try if it works).

I have it, It works ok, it will track your location..We only use it once in a while and only when Karen isn't with me as I will get lost even trying to get on the trail from the back of my house...lol... For $2.99 I figure you get what you pay for...

good point, 2.99 is nothing but if its wrong that could cost a lot of nightmares?    I know we have some trails that are not correct on the app.

It works on my new phone and seems to work well enough. ... maybe as well as my handheld GPS with twice the screen. Anxious to see if they update the maps sometime. ... one year is passable but 2 is a stretch.

I have it for my Blackberry and works. I forgot I had that app. I found it slow on the 3G network. I use my Garmin with the Trakmaps.

I bought it last year and it was all i had to use. It worked well, i just found that in some spots you had to refresh your location a few times for it to completely lock into your location. for the money though it does the trick.

I agree, 3 $ is pretty cheap for a mapping, location-getting app.

I've got both the iOS and Android version they work well.

Ignore the last updated date in the app store. The app just reads the OFSC website for it's data so it's current as far trail locations go. It will read from its stored data should you be out of cell range.

It works well for the price, but I think the biggest problem is that in some situations it will tell you that your location is only accurate to within a 7km radius (so anywhere in a 14km circle) and when you are trying to pinpoint your position relative to an intersection or something that is not always accurate enough. If I remember correctly I have seen a message that my position was within a 60km radius once, which is useless.

Don't think cell location is very accurate, use built in GPS instead.

Cell phone coverage can be spotty in some spots in D15. But you don't need GPS anyway 'cause our signage is flawless...

Have to be careful with that. A lot of phones are A-GPS only. And most people don't know it.

A-GPS uses the cell towers only to pinpint your location, not satellites. In the city it's as good or better then GPS. On the trail when your only seeing 1 cell tower your location is crap.

Sounds like your device is A-GPS only equiped, or you haven't giving the app access to your GPS, or location services are turned off. That would explain the lack of accuracy.

Up here that's close enough.  If you're looking for an intersection and it gets you to within 70 km, your choices are pretty easy .... lol !

At least you know you are in or near Ontario :-)

just by the hydro bill

You just wait. Soon the hydro bill will be like having a second shift in wages for most businesses.

It will still be cheaper then other provinces and over half the US states.

Quebec might be cheaper from a business customer, but not for homeowners. Alberta is lower per KW but they have a pile of extras well that push it way up. East coast is the same way, and has the most unstable grid in Canada outside of the territories. Saskatchewan is less because they still burn coal.

I'll agree with you for Texas and Ariizona, but not California. They are like Quebec, thier rates to homeowners is 18 cents 7 cents more then what industry pays.

26 of the 48 continental states have a higher per KW and delviery cost then Ontario. So that's over half... New York's KW cost is more that what most of Ontario pays in total.

But if you think they are high now, just wait until the next election. The new PC leader has already said he will look strongly at leasing the rest of the nuclear fleet to Bruce Power. Go Google what Bruce gets per KW vs OPG and let me know if you think that one is good for our hyrdo bill.

Mine works on a plane giving me speed and altitude, so I guess I'm good.
