Ox
It is official, and I have been given the OK to "spread the word" that Halfway has been sold as of 2 weeks ago. Steve and Gayle are planning on hanging around for a few more weeks yet, and then they are heading to their trap camp to get ready for a leisurely season of trapping. Halfway will NOT be open this winter as it is apparently getting to be too late to get everything in order to have the D opened up and back on all the maps and such. They ARE planning to be open NEXT winter (2015/2016) Although I doo not personally know the new owners, they are reasonably close to me and I have been to a steak house that they own that is popular in the area. This may be a positive sign for meals at Halfway? AC/YA may know them as they are closer to him. One note that was funny was Steve told me that as of two weeks ago yet, there was a pile of snow in The Soo that was still 14' tall, and they went in and knocked it down and spread it out so's that it would melt before it freezes again. . AC+YA
Thanks Ox, Have known about the pending sale, but glad to hear it is official. Too bad it came so late this year. I believe it is Bill's Steak House in Bronson, Michigan which is directly across from the White Star Auction (Snowmobile Auction) on US 12 (Chicago Road). You can look both up on the web. They are only 15 minutes from my lake house, so I visit both. Hope to see the D trail open up again and a true weekend loop out of SSM come back using D trail and F trail. Ox
Bronson - RIGHT! Yep - Bills... I told my boy that it was in Coldwater today I think.... Note to self - correct that mistake before he heads up there in search of a Halfway "fix". (Likely sooner than later) Yeah - the sale has been "Pending" for aboot a year now. I wonder if it always takes that long to get a green card into Canada? .
Wildman
That is great news, hopefully the resources are there on both ends to reopen and maintain the trail. It is probably good to give both clubs a year to regroup. That is a narly trail to work with.

Canuck
When this re-opens, jump on it. I did it with 17 year old son and he still talks about it. Based out of Elliot Lake, north to Chapleau, across to D'Ville/Wawa; and then thru Halfway Haven to Sault Ste Marie; back to Elliot Lake base. Fast, efficient trip. Highly recommended. Also wish the new owners all the best in this endeavor. Local clubs have their work cut out for them in the upcoming season(s). Definitely a consideration when buying that 2nd or 3rd permit for a family (direct permit $ where you 'will' ride).
Wildman
What part is gnarly? . Allot of it when you are in the groomer seat. Lots of off camber sections that the drag doesn't particularly want to follow the power unit. Of course this is jmo.

Halfway is not near Hwy. 17 and is about 90 miles north of Searchmont, 60 miles southwest of Chapleau and 70 miles southeast of Wawa along a hydro line on the old D trail shut down last couple years in the winter. Ski I guess that I should have read all the replies before I took the time to figger out where this was, but yes - Dahl Township is basically the corner of Paint Lake Rd and 17. "Our" Halfway Haven is 60 klicks from pavement. http://www.halfwayhaven.com/ .
