No fear until the flare gun (or at least that's what it looks like at :17).

Thanks for sharing the link.

If you watch the full version this bonehead was chasing the moose down the trail. One reason you don't try to chase animals on the trail! Imagine if someone was coming the other direction?!

We came across a number of deer on the trail and followed them slowly down the trail. They never went any faster than a fast walk, kept looking back at us and then finally took off into the trees and waired for us to go by. I couldn't ever imagine trying that with a moose. The one time we came across a moose on the trail we could see it in the distance, cow na calf. We shut down the sleds and waited patiently in the distance while they munched on some of the trees and eventually wandered off. The outcome in a confrontation would be moose 1 snowmobiler 0.

This article has a link to the longer video, along with comments from the snowmobilers.

This is just dumb and dumber on snowmobiles.

My first thought was, who's stupid enough to chase a moose, especially on a sled. Then second thought is why the heck is someone carrying a hand gun on a sled.

Glad I'm in Canada.

Yeah I agree with you sledding in the states must be rough if you need to carry a gun.

I find it somewhat disturbing to read the comments on other forums from US riders claiming the snowmobilers did no wrong and they would have shot the moose being in the same situation.

I guess it just demonstrates the totally different attitude some have once they can carry a gun with them.

For my wife and I seeing the deer and if we are real lucky a moose is a highlight of the day. It's nice to stop and watch the deer for a while. We only came across moose once. Mom and calf were munching on some tree branches up ahead in the distance. We stopped, watched and waited until they wandered off.

Well, I don't see anything wrong here. The Powells said they were slowing down and expected the moose to jump off the trail as they usually do. What if the moose just stopped on the trail for an hour. Are they supposed to wait? What if you were driving down the road or a highway in your car and came up behind a moose or a deer running down the road. Do you stop? Many of us have come up behind deer on the trail and we slow down and they usually just run ahead and jump off the trail. No big deal. If someone wants to carry a gun and it is legal, then that's up to them.

"Chasing" an animal when we see 1 on the trail is the last thing we do. We'll stop & let the other rides catch up so they can see the animal too.

There was another case in the US this past year where a sledder shot a moose on the trail. http://www.wideopenspaces.com/snowmobiler-shoots-moose/

I've been to the US many times since the mid 80s. Only crossed paths w/ someone that was packing. When I tell others down there about that incident, they just shake their heads.

Maybe there's a lot of gang activity in that part of Maine & a sledder needs to protect themselves?

I think I would stay far away from any moose on or near a trail.

I saw the full version & they followed/chased the moose for 20 seconds for crying out loud. Idgit deserved to get charged (by the moose & the DNR).

Those jackasses would have deserved it if the moose had gotten defensive and done a number on them and their sleds. What kind of idiot thinks it's fun to chase down a moose. If not mistaken you can be charged for that in Ontario can't you?

From the Ontario regs:

Snowmobiles, vehicles or boats may not be used for chasing, pursuing, harassing, capturing, injuring or killing any wildlife.

Dumbest part of both incidents the one in January were the fellow shot the moose and this one. Why be so stupid to post a video of this on Youtube in the 1st place? :crazy_grn:  Did they expect people to all say COOL!!! ?

That said it was nice to see the moose attack the bonehead

Whenever I come up to a moose or deer I slow down and stop

Just like anybody who has any common sense would do. Obviously those in the videos are lacking in that department.
