Some photos of us near Mekatina Ontario last weekend.  That moose came right towards us.  Not sure if its seen a human before.  We were in the deep interior of Algoma.

That's pretty rugged country in that area from what I recall on the train trip to Hearst. Are there trails in the area besides the slush on the lake?

Hi Dan,

Where did you trailer to to start your exploration?  I really am not sure where Mekatina is, so I am trying to put it together in my mind.

Thanks

Scott

(you should post the video showing the trip to the lake of slush)

Thanks for posting this revrnd.  Now I know where it is.

I wonder if Dan went up the old D Trail from Searchmont, or cut in at Fraizer Road (not sure of spelling) off Hyw. 17?

Sorry for the delay in replying and thanks for posting the map.  Yes, we went up the Whitman Dam Road to marker 30, then branched off on the Old Ogidaki Tower road and took the Loggers Lake road north, breaking trail for a good part of the way.  The other route up the Whitman Dam Road is longer in distance but goesl all the way to the Domtar Road, then north to the Mekatina Cross-Over road, then west to Mekatina.

On another note, there was a crew that went ATVing to Halfway Haven this past weekend and they said there was still snow in the bush in and at Halfway Haven.  This ATV trip was on Saturday May 17th.  Wow. what a long winter.

Hi Dan,

Have you been out on your motorcycle exploring yet this spring?  I know you do that as well.

I heard that they will be logging up Whitman Dam road this coming winter, so will they fix the washouts or at least the big one?

I guess they will open the bypass trail north out of Searchmont next year.  If you hear anything on gas for the area, let us know.

Have a great summer.

Scott

Hi Scott.  Nice to hear from you and hope all is well.

The bike is ready to go.  Here's a few photos from John B  who went to Halfway Haven this past weekend.  There's still snow up there. (photos attached).  Photos taken on May 17th.

Dan, back in the 80s a friend who lived in Elliot Lake & I took the back roads (up to 129 & over to Ranger Lake) to the Soo 1 weekend in May. We saw snow on the shady side of the roads like the pics you posted.
